Compare the Hotel California 40th Anniversary Deluxe Edition and Forever Changes 50th Anniversary Edition box sets. Decide which mixed-format edition fits your collection.
Quick answer
Choose the Hotel California 40th Anniversary Deluxe Edition if you want high-resolution and surround mixes plus a hardbound photo book; choose the Forever Changes 50th Anniversary Edition if you value a remastered mono version on CD and a vinyl LP alongside the CDs and DVD.
Why the format mix matters more than the anniversary number
Both sets are mixed-format box sets, but they serve different listening habits. The Hotel California set pairs two CDs with a Blu-ray Audio disc, so you get the original album, ten previously unreleased live recordings, and hi-res and 5.1 mixes. The Forever Changes set spreads its content across four CDs, one DVD, and one LP, including the CD debut of a remastered version by original co-producer Bruce Botnick and the first-ever CD release of the mono mix.
If you already own a surround system or a Blu-ray player, the Hotel California set gives you a reason to use it. If you prefer vinyl for casual listening and CDs for deep-dive sessions, the Forever Changes set covers both without requiring a Blu-ray player.
The physical extras: book versus vinyl
The Hotel California set comes in an 11 x 11 hardbound book with rare and unseen photos from the era, a replica tour book, and three stand-alone posters. That makes it a display piece as much as a listening set. The Forever Changes set includes a vinyl LP as part of the package, which adds a tactile, analog option that the Hotel California set does not offer. Neither set lists a specific vinyl weight or pressing detail in the supplied catalog facts, so if those details matter, treat them as unknown until you check the product page.
What each set does not include
The Hotel California set does not include a vinyl record; its focus is CD and Blu-ray Audio. The Forever Changes set does not include a Blu-ray or hi-res surround mix; its video content is on DVD. If you want the highest-resolution digital audio, the Hotel California set is the only one of the two that advertises hi-res mixes. If you want a vinyl copy of the album inside the box, Forever Changes is the only one that provides it.
Decision rules for choosing between the two box sets
- If you have a Blu-ray player and surround speakers: Pick the Hotel California 40th Anniversary Deluxe Edition. Its Blu-ray Audio disc includes hi-res and 5.1 mixes that you cannot get from the Forever Changes set. Check that your Blu-ray player supports the audio formats listed on the product page before buying.
- If you want a vinyl record inside the box: Pick the Forever Changes 50th Anniversary Edition. It includes an LP, while the Hotel California set does not. Confirm the LP is a standard weight or special pressing if that matters to you; the catalog does not specify.
- If you care about mono mixes and alternate versions: Pick the Forever Changes set. It includes the first-ever CD release of the mono version and alternate mixes, plus rare and unreleased singles and studio outtakes. The Hotel California set focuses on live recordings and hi-res mixes rather than mono or alternate studio versions.
- If you want a display-ready book with photos: Pick the Hotel California set. It comes in an 11 x 11 hardbound book with rare and unseen photos, a replica tour book, and three posters. The Forever Changes set does not list a hardbound book or posters in the supplied facts.
